At the center of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His life was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to look after his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the gales among the single tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his charges instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
But, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw no beast.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust here once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
